The Montrose Red Hawks are taking a road trip to challenge the Discovery Canyon Thunder at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Montrose is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Montrose is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 15 runs on Tuesday, they were much more limited against Delta on Thursday. They came up short against the Panthers, falling 10-1. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 10, 2022, but that streak is no more.
Meanwhile, Discovery Canyon had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 runs) and they went ahead and made it three last Thursday. They put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 16-1 victory. Considering the Thunder have won five contests by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Tristan Lewis looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jaxon Ross was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Jake Cody, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Discovery Canyon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .621. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matchups.
Discovery Canyon's record is now 5-1. As for Montrose, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-5.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Montrose hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .314. However, it's not like Discovery Canyon struggles in that department as they've averaged .386. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Montrose suffered a grim 13-0 defeat to Discovery Canyon in their previous matchup back in March of 2025. Can the Red Hawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
