Baseball Recap: Central Catholic Drops Season-High Score on Alexander

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Central Catholic). They put the hurt on the Alexander Bulldogs with a sharp 13-5 victory on Wednesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

JD Amescua made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

In other pitching news, Landon Holloway looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.

Back at the plate, Luke Ramos was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4. That's the most runs he has posted over his last seven matchups. Another player making a difference was Matt McClenan, who scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Central Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .564. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Central Catholic pushed their record up to 10-3-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Alexander, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Central Catholic will take on Eagle Pass at 5:30 p.m. on March 19th. As for Alexander, they will square off against United South at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (United South 2.6, Alexander 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.
