After flying high against Tournament Team on Wednesday, the McClintock Chargers came back down to earth. McClintock fell just short of Red Mountain by a score of 58-55. While losing is never fun, McClintock can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 132nd, while Red Mountain is ranked 50th).
Despite the loss, McClintock saw an underclassman step up: Lamaiya Woodberry scored 24 points. The matchup was Woodberry's ninth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Malani Reynoso, who scored 12 points.
Red Mountain got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Makaia Jenkins out in front who scored eight points along with six steals and five rebounds. Payton Westra was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds.
McClintock's loss dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Red Mountain, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-3.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. McClintock and Campo Verde will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 3rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Campo Verde focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 26 on December 29, 2023. Red Mountain will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Highland at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th.
