Two dominant backs in Gage Zimmerman and Messiah Mickens are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Delone Catholic Squires will head out on the road to face off against the Trinity Shamrocks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Delone Catholic fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They breezed by Fairfield at home to the tune of 49-18. 49 seems to be a good number for Delone Catholic as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.
Delone Catholic relied on the efforts of Zimmerman, who rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries, and Brady Dettinburn, who rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries. Zimmerman's longest rush was for an incredible 78 yards. Colby Noel and his 92 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Delone Catholic's victory.
Meanwhile, Trinity humbled Halifax with a 45-8 victory. Given Trinity's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 139th, while Halifax is ranked 479th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Trinity got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Mickens out in front who rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Caleb Wray, who threw for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Their wins bumped Delone Catholic to 6-4 and Trinity to 7-3.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Delone Catholic has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 262.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Trinity struggles in that department as they've been averaging 178.7 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Delone Catholic was taken down by Trinity 49-12 when the teams last played back in August. Can Delone Catholic avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
