The Cesar Chavez Champions entered their tilt with the Sunnyside Blue Devils with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Cesar Chavez came out on top in a nail-biter against Sunnyside on Thursday and snuck past 51-48. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Cesar Chavez has posted yet this season.
Cesar Chavez's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Sophia Doromal, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Doromal is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Dalaiha Madden, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds.
Despite the loss, Sunnyside had strong showings from Nayeli Nidez-Acu?a, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 22 rebounds, and Dora Medina, who scored ten points along with five rebounds and two steals. Nidez-Acu?a is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last five games she's played. Alana Felix was another key contributor, scoring three points along with nine assists and five rebounds.
Cesar Chavez pushed their record up to 14-2 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.1 points per game. As for Sunnyside, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cesar Chavez will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Shadow Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on January 25th. Sunnyside won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Ironwood Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on January 12th. Hopefully Ironwood Ridge focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Thursday.
