The South Mountain Jaguars will look to defend their home court on Thursday against the Apollo Hawks at 7:00 p.m. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
South Mountain's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their third straight loss. They took a hard 69-52 fall against Westview. While losing is never fun, South Mountain can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 224th, while Westview is ranked 92nd).
South Mountain's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Tyler Pena, who scored 14 points, and Nick Robinson who scored 11 points. Damion Ruiz-Graham was another key contributor, scoring 6 points.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Apollo's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They fell just short of Sunrise Mountain by a score of 59-56. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Apollo in their matchups with Sunrise Mountain: they've now lost four in a row.
The losses dropped South Mountain to 2-5 and Westview to 4-2.
South Mountain might still be hurting after the 64-38 defeat they got from Apollo in their previous meeting back in December of 2022. Thankfully for South Mountain, Bobby Holcomb (who scored 26 points along with 5 assists and 3 steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
