Central is on a six-game streak of home losses dating back to last season, and Southwest EC a three-game streak of away losses. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Tuesday. The Central Spartans will take on the Southwest EC Eagles at 6:00 p.m. This will be Central's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
Central was handed a six-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene two weeks ago. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 win over El Camino.
Alexia Rubio was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Southwest EC hadn't done well against Brawley recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Southwest EC blew past Brawley 13-2. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won four matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Alexis Trujillo and Nicole Verdugo were a major factor no matter where they played. Throwing, Trujillo pitched 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Meanwhile, Verdugo tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero hits allowed gave her a new career-low. At the plate, Trujillo scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-4, while Verdugo scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those two runs gave Verdugo a new career-high.
In other batting news, Emilie Marquez and Delylah Santiago did most of the damage at the plate: Marquez went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Santiago scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits Marquez has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaydence Wiewel, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Central has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. Southwest EC now has a winning record of 6-5.
Central might still be hurting after the 15-1 defeat they got from Southwest EC in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will Central have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
