Basketball Recap: Mt. Zion Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Mt. Zion had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They walked away with a 71-58 win over the Greenville Patriots. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 73-54 last Thursday.

Mt. Zion's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Payton Waters, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards. The dominant performance gave Waters a new career-high in rebounds. Another player making a difference was Quintavious Heard, who posted six points and seven boards.

Several Patriots players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Marquel Deering, who went 7 for 16 on his way to 21 points along with six assists and six rebounds. That was a full 36.2% of Greenville's points, marking the third time in a row he's had more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jarvis Simmons, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards.

Mt. Zion is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 14-8 record this season. As for Greenville, they dropped their record down to 1-14 with the loss, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mt. Zion will head out to take on Manchester at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Manchester's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five contests. As for Greenville, they will head out on the road to challenge Atlanta Classical Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
