The Pueblo South Colts will challenge the Sand Creek Scorpions at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Pueblo South will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
Pueblo South's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They walked away with a 3-0 win over Palmer Ridge. While the Colts didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Pueblo South saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Andrew Nolasco, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Sand Creek). They blew past Palmer 22-6 on Thursday. The victory continues a trend for the Scorpions in their matchups with the Terrors: they've now won three in a row.
Avyn Walter and Braden Hunnanm were a major factor no matter where they played. On the mound, Walter tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Hunnanm tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance gave him a new career-low in hits. At bat, Walter scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his six plate appearances, while Hunnanm scored two runs while going 1-for-1. Hunnanm also put up an RBI, which was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Jackson Lucero and Carson Lucero did most of the damage at the plate: Jackson went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI, while Carson scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. The dominant performance gave Jackson a new career-high in hits. Brody Walter was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.
Sand Creek was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .514. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.
Pueblo South pushed their record up to 6-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Sand Creek, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.
Saturday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Pueblo South has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .491. However, it's not like Sand Creek struggles in that department as they've averaged .519. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
