St. Patrick hasn't had much luck against Sumrall recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish will welcome the Bobcats at 7:00 p.m. St. Patrick is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
St. Patrick took a six-run loss the last time they faced off against Poplarville, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Fighting Irish came out on top in a nail-biter against the Hornets on Saturday, sneaking past 2-1. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Gunner Eure was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.
Meanwhile, Sumrall had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it nine on Saturday. They never let the Wildcats get on the board and left with a 6-0 victory. Give the Bobcats' pitching crew some credit: that's the team's third straight shutout.
Sumrall also got a great performance from Cooper McCoy as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over five innings pitched. McCoy has been consistent: he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Braelyn Harrison, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. Another player making a difference was Parker Hawkins, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Sumrall's win bumped their record up to 11-2. As for St. Patrick, they now have a winning record of 7-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. St. Patrick has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Sumrall struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
St. Patrick suffered a grim 7-0 defeat to Sumrall in their previous meeting back in March of 2021. Will the Fighting Irish have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
