Baseball Recap: Holy Cross Gets the Win

Holy Cross took a 11-run defeat the last time they faced off against Bullitt East, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars came out on top in a nail-biter against the Chargers on Tuesday, sneaking past 9-8. This was a revenge game for the Cougars: when they faced off against the Chargers last Monday, they had to take a 13-2 loss.

Tyler Manning was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over 5.1 innings pitched. Manning was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Mason Lanham and Noah Basham did most of the damage at the plate: Lanham went 4-for-5 with three runs, while Basham got on base in four of his six plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Those four hits gave Lanham a new career-high.

Holy Cross kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Holy Cross is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-13 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Bullitt East, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-4-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Holy Cross will square off against W.E.B. DuBois Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lions have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.82 runs per game on average), something the Cougars will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Bullitt East, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Eastern at 6:00 p.m.
