The Overton Eagles will challenge the Bertrand Vikings at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Bertrand took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Overton, who comes in off a win.
Overton took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They claimed a resounding 49-6 win over Maywood/Hayes Center. The Eagles have beaten the Wolves the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Wolves has come to flipping the script.
Overton got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Eli Luther out in front who threw for 188 yards and four touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes, and also rushed for 42 yards. Another rusher making a difference was Gage Clifton, who rushed for 85 yards and three scores on only 12 carries.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Overton proved: they limited Maywood/Hayes Center to a paltry three yards per carry. The team can thank Luther for the heroic effort on defense: he. Overton didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.3.
Overton didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Brock McCarter and Dawsen McCarter.
Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 58-12, which was the final score in Bertrand's tilt against Hitchcock County on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska football rankings (they are ranked 66th, while the Falcons are ranked 11th).
Although Bertrand took the loss, they still got scores from Cooper Langford and Hunter Nelson.
Overton now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Bertrand, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 3-2.
Everything came up roses for Overton against Bertrand in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 49-12 win. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Vikings have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
