The Weeki Wachee Hornets will be home for the holidays to greet the South Sumter Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Weeki Wachee will be strutting in after a win while South Sumter will be coming in after a loss.
Weeki Wachee has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four games by 29 points or more this season. They blew past Crystal River 69-27 on the road. Given Weeki Wachee's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 194th, while Crystal River is ranked 404th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Weeki Wachee to victory, but perhaps none more so than Paige Atwater, who scored 20 points. Atwater is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Joelys Rodriguez, who scored 14 points along with five assists and five steals.
Meanwhile, South Sumter's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their fifth straight loss. They fell to Tavares 28-24.
Weeki Wachee pushed their record up to 5-2 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.5 points per game. As for South Sumter, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.
Weeki Wachee came out on top in a nail-biter against South Sumter when the teams last played back in January of 2022, sneaking past 42-40. Does Weeki Wachee have another victory up their sleeve, or will South Sumter turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
