After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Casey-Westfield, Marshall was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Richland County Tigers as they made off with an 8-2 victory. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 games by six runs or more this season.
Kyla Gustafson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on four hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Marshall got a massive performance out of Lynn Welborn, who fired off two home runs and three runs while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave Welborn a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Haley McGuire, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double.
Marshall was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .424. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Richland County only posted a batting average of .174.
Marshall's win bumped their record up to 15-6. As for Richland County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-6.
Coming up, Marshall is taking a road trip to square off against Westville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers' pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so the Lions' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Richland County, they will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against Mattoon at 4:30 p.m.
