The Foxcroft Academy Ponies will face off against the Mattanawcook Lynx at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Foxcroft Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Foxcroft Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Washington Academy, who was ranked third at the time (Foxcroft Academy was ranked 12th). The Ponies came out on top against the Raiders by a score of 8-3 on Friday.
Hayden Strout and Lucas Sands were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Strout struck out seven batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Sands struck out eight batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). Strout has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Strout went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Sands went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was Sands' first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Thomas Day, who went 1-for-3 with one home run. The team also got some help courtesy of Calvin Landry, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two runs.
Meanwhile, Mattanawcook strolled into their game on Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. Everything went their way against George Stevens Academy as they made off with a 13-1 victory. The Lynx might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by six runs or more this season.
Like Foxcroft Academy, Mattanawcook also got a great game from a two-way player: Isaac Ritchie. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Ritchie was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Dylan Landry was excellent, getting on base in both of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Ryan Thibodeau, who earned two runs and two stolen bases.
Mattanawcook hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive matches.
Foxcroft Academy's win was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Mattanawcook, their win bumped their record up to 6-0.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Foxcroft Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 12.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mattanawcook struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Foxcroft Academy took their victory against Mattanawcook when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 14-2 score. Will the Ponies repeat their success, or do the Lynx have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
