The Fairmont Golden Tornadoes had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22.6 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Wednesday. They claimed a resounding 78-42 win over Purnell Swett on the road. The result was nothing new for Fairmont, who have now won three matchups by 33 points or more so far this season.
Fairmont's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Issac McKellar led the charge by scoring 13 points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Josiah Billings, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds.
Collin Sampson and Aidan Clewis certainly did their best on Wednesday to try and avoid the loss. Sampson scored nine points, while Clewis scored 11 points. Clewis set a new season high mark in steals with two.
Purnell Swett struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Fairmont pushed their record up to 7-1 with that win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.0 points per game. As for Purnell Swett, they now have a losing record at 2-3.
Fairmont will head out on the road to face off against Red Springs at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Red Springs will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 475th, while Fairmont is ranked 158th). Purnell Swett won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Whiteville at 8:00 p.m. on December 21st. Whiteville is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
