It was a good run, but the Portage Mustangs unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Friday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 77-52 walloping at the hands of River Valley. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Portage has suffered yet this season.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Trae Kargo, who scored 16 points along with six assists. Kargo continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Bode Layo, who scored 12 points along with three steals.
River Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Dom Speal led the charge by scoring 25 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Speal has scored all season. Jayden Whitfield was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Portage's loss dropped their record down to 7-5. As for River Valley, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a massive bump to their 9-5 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Portage will take on Conemaugh Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Conemaugh Valley knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 15 matchups -- so hopefully Portage likes a good challenge. As for River Valley, they will be playing in front of their home fans against West Shamokin at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
