The Robertson Cardinals came tearing into Friday's matchup with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22.9 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Pojoaque Valley and snuck past 67-65. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Robertson has posted yet this season.
Jesse James Gonzales was his usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathaniel Gonzales, who scored ten points.
Pojoaque Valley's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dalian Lopez, who scored 14 points. Luke Pacheco was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six rebounds.
Robertson's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.5 points per game. As for Pojoaque Valley, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-7.
Robertson and Portales will face off at 5:30 p.m. on January 6th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Portales is ranked 33rd, while Robertson is ranked 11th). Pojoaque Valley won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Lovington at 2:30 p.m. on January 6th. Lovington is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 60.5 points per game.
