Baseball Recap: Monroe Catholic Wins Going Away Against Hutchison

Monroe Catholic had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 18-run drubbing they dealt Hutchison on Wednesday. The Rams put the hurt on the Hawks with a sharp 20-2 victory. Considering the Rams have won four contests by more than nine runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Daniel Bergstrom made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three). He was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those stolen bases were his first of the season.

In other pitching news, Liam Quirk looked comfortable as he pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Monroe Catholic is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 3-4 otherwise.

Back at the plate, Jett Debaun was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Charlie Menard, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Monroe Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.8 runs over those games. As for Hutchison, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Coming up, Monroe Catholic will challenge Lathrop at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Rams are facing the Malemutes at the right time seeing as the Malemutes are stuck on a six-game losing streak. Hutchison does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
