Mason is 8-1-1 against Sycamore since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Comets will look to defend their home field against the Aviators at 5:00 p.m. After the two teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one won't be so lucky on Monday.
Sycamore will be up against a hot Mason team: the squad just extended their winning streak to six. The Comets were the clear victors by a 13-5 margin over East Central on Saturday. The Comets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by eight runs or more this season.
Sadie Hayes made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Mason let Morgan McBrayer and Audrey Renners run wild. McBrayer went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Renners went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Becca Zellner, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
Mason kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in six consecutive contests.
Sycamore not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since April 8th (when they won 14-2). They put the hurt on Colerain with a sharp 14-2 victory. With that win, the Aviators brought their scoring average up to 6.1 runs per game.
Avery Hartig was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Those ten strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Sycamore got a massive performance out of Kaitlyn Gambaccini, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and two runs. Alex Davis was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
The victory got Sycamore back to even at 8-8. As for Mason, their win bumped their record up to 10-6.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. Mason hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Sycamore struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Everything went Mason's way against Sycamore in their previous matchup on April 6th, as Mason made off with a 13-2 victory. Will the Comets repeat their success, or do the Aviators have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
