Even though the Mullen Mustangs have not done well against the Columbine Rebels recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Mullen came out on top against Columbine by a score of 81-71. Given Mullen's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while Columbine is ranked 267th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Jordan Leslie, who scored 17 points along with eight assists and six rebounds. The match was his fourth in a row with at least ten points. Mason Bonner was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with eight rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Columbine lost, one person who can't be blamed is Cash Boykin. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 29 points and 12 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Carter McCoy, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds.
The victory got Mullen back to even at 2-2. As for Columbine, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-2.
Mullen will head out on the road to face off against Lakewood at 7:30 p.m. on December 12th. Hopefully Lakewood focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Saturday. As for Columbine, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Thomas Jefferson at 7:00 p.m. Allowing an average of 51.3 points per game, Thomas Jefferson has struggled on the defensive end, but that doesn't have to be the case in this contest.
