The Midland Trail Patriots will face off against the WestSide Renegades at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Midland Trail is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season.
Midland Trail is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Liberty 49-47. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Patriots have posted since January 23, 2024.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Midland Trail to victory, but perhaps none more so than Thad Brown, who posted 16 points and eight boards. Camryn Thomas was another key player, putting up ten points.
Meanwhile, WestSide waltzed into their game on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They blew past the Miners 80-55. Given the Renegades' advantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 27th, while the Miners are ranked 102nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
WestSide's win came from a few key players Midland Trail will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Coltin Lester, who went 6-for-14 en route to 13 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in steals. Another player making a difference was Austin Bishop, who shot 55% from the field to rack up 18 points.
The win made it two in a row for Midland Trail and bumps their season record up to 13-10. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.0 points over those games. As for WestSide, their record is now 15-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Midland Trail has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 25.4 boards per game. However, it's not like WestSide struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Midland Trail ended up a good deal behind WestSide in their previous meeting back in February of 2022, losing 80-61. Can Midland Trail avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
