The Carterville Lions had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They walked away with a 61-50 victory over Mt. Vernon. This was payback for Carterville, who suffered a 70-55 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Amayah Doyle was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 15 rebounds. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Kennedy Rushing, who scored eight points along with six rebounds.
Carterville is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 matches, which somehow isn't as good as their 19-5 record this season. As for Mt. Vernon, their loss ended a 15-game streak of away wins and brought them to 19-4.
Carterville will head out on the road to face off against Harrisburg at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Mt. Vernon, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Cahokia at 6:00 p.m. Cahokia will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings (they are ranked 468th, while Mt. Vernon is ranked 42nd).
