The Laney Buccaneers put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They walked away with a 41-33 victory over Pender. Given Laney's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 59th, while Pender is ranked 252nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Laney's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Aniece Lewis led the charge by scoring 10 points along with 6 steals. The contest was Lewis' third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lauren Bastable, who scored 10 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Laney has yet to lose a matchup at home this season, leaving them with a 5-0 record. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.3 points per game. As for Pender, they now have a losing record at 1-2.
Laney will be playing in front of their home fans against West Brunswick at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully West Brunswick focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Friday. As for Pender, they will head out on the road to face off against East Columbus at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
