After a string of four wins, the Southwest DeKalb Panthers's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They took a 58-51 hit to the loss column at the hands of Buford. While losing is never fun, Southwest DeKalb can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 200th, while Buford is ranked tenth).
Southwest DeKalb's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Messiah Mergan, who scored 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Turner, who scored eight points.
Southwest DeKalb now has a losing record at 4-5. As for Buford, they pushed their record up to 8-1 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home.
Southwest DeKalb will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against St. Francis at 9:00 p.m. on December 28th. St. Francis has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 337 points over their last five matches. Buford will take on Sandy Creek in a holiday battle at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at. Sandy Creek is coming into the contest hot, having won their last five games.
