Softball Recap: St. Raphael Academy Comes Up Short

St. Raphael Academy dropped down to 7-3 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Coventry Oakers by a score of 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Saints have suffered against the Oakers since June 18, 2021.

Isabella Sousa spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, St. Raphael Academy saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Makayla McDermott, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Another was Sophie Roman, who went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

As for Coventry, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-5-1 record this season. Five seems to be a good number for them as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

On Coventry's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Kelsey Knutton gave up just two earned (and one unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up eight Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Mary Mcgovern, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Payton Baris was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. St. Raphael Academy is set to take on their familiar foe Moses Brown at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Coventry will face off against rival Cumberland at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
