Lowry has gone a perfect 10-0 against Dayton recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Buckaroos will take on the Dust Devils at 3:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Lowry has four straight victories, Dayton has 16 straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Lowry is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Churchill County, who was ranked 16th at the time (Lowry was ranked 13th). The Buckaroos were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Greenwave on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Buckaroos, who have now won 11 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Maite Bengochea made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Liliana Aguilar was excellent, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Natalya Guizar was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
The home team had won the previous two meetings between Dayton and Elko, and Elko kept the tradition alive. The Dust Devils fell just short of the Indians by a score of 7-6 on Saturday.
Like Lowry, Dayton also got a great game from a two-way player: LaSade Conti. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over six innings while giving up five earned (and two unearned) runs off 11 hits (and only one walk). Conti was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Esmeralda Hernandez was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Macie Hannum, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Lowry's win was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 22-6. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games. As for Dayton, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-17.
Dayton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Lowry has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.6 hits per game. It's a different story for Dayton, though, as they've been averaging 9 hits. Given Lowry's sizable advantage in that area, the Dust Devils will need to find a way to close that gap.
Lowry took their win against Dayton in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 13-1 score. Do the Buckaroos have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Dust Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
