This season hasn't been kind to the Carson Cougars, who are still winless after their 13th game. They took a serious blow against South Rowan on Tuesday, falling 61-31. Carson was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-17.
Julia Burleson and Rylee Hedrick certainly did their best on Tuesday to try and avoid the loss. Burleson scored six points, while Hedrick scored four points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Carson smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
South Rowan's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ari Alston, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds and four steals. That's the first time this season that Alston pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kynlee Dextraze, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Carson bumped their record down to 0-13 with that defeat, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. As for South Rowan, their victory bumped their record up to 3-10.
Carson won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Statesville at 6:00 p.m. on January 17th. Statesville comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 18 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. As for South Rowan, they will head out on the road to face off against Northwest Cabarrus at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Northwest Cabarrus presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than South Rowan in North Carolina (Northwest Cabarrus is ranked 105th, while South Rowan is ranked 458th).
