CORNELIUS, N.C. - Hough (Cornelius, N.C.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 24 in North Carolina, but was stunned by
West Mecklenburg (Charlotte, N.C.), 45-10. West Mecklenburg was ranked at No. 90 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for North Carolina coming into the week.
The Hawks were up 8-3 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Jalen McClendon in the first quarter.
West Mecklenburg expanded its lead to 21 points entering the fourth quarter. WM scored five times in the third, including once on a touchdown run.
McClendon dashed for two rushing touchdowns during the Charlotte school's triumph.
The Huskies' Nicholas Burrow played well. The senior wide receiver threw one touchdown. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.
The Hawks' most effective player was McClendon. He threw two touchdowns.
Hough's lone touchdown came on a 45-yard pass from Burrow to Josh Stilley in the third quarter.
West Mecklenburg came into the game allowing 16.5 points per game. The 10 points that HHS ended with were well below its average of 28.2 coming into the game. The Cornelius school came in surrendering 16.3 points per game this season.
With the win WM extended its winning streak to four games.
