After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Justin Vela in the first quarter,
Rio Mesa (Oxnard, Calif.) was up 29-7 at the half.
The Spartans grew their lead to 36 points entering the fourth quarter. Rio Mesa scored two times in the third, including once on a
Cameron Wrout touchdown pass to Vela.
Vela stood out for RM in the win. The junior wide receiver ran for one touchdown and caught one touchdown.
Hueneme's lone touchdown came on a 62-yard pass from Adan Salas to Chris Nichols in the second quarter.
The Spartans has had a rough season, allowing 35.4 points per game. However, Rio Mesa's defense dug in and limited Hueneme (Oxnard, Calif.) well below its season average of 17.6 points per game.
The victory was a step in the right direction for RM, which was coming off a 34-20 defeat at the hands of Buena in its previous game. The loss comes after Hueneme defeated La Quinta 59-28 last week.
Rio Mesa (1-5) will play a Pacific View game against Channel Islands next week, while Hueneme (1-5) will take on Pacifica also in a Pacific View game.
