Cannon had lost six straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 1-22 to make it seven. They came up short against the Providence Day Chargers, falling 17-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Chargers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-0 on Tuesday.
Cannon saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Colin Kieley, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.
As for Providence Day, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-5-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games.
On Providence Day's side, Owen Shirey made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Shirey has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That's the most runs he has posted since April 6th.
In other batting news, Cullen Ward and Charlie Kropf did most of the damage at the plate: Ward got on base in all four of his plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Kropf went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those five stolen bases gave Ward a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Trevor Yancey, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Cannon does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Providence Day, they will head out on the road to take on Carmel Christian at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Chargers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season.
