Basketball Recap: Asheboro Hybrid Academy Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Emily West and Mckenna Voncannon

After flying high against Sheets Memorial Christian last Tuesday, Asheboro Hybrid Academy came back down to earth. The Asheboro Hybrid Academy Warriors lost to Gospel Light Christian at home by a 52-36 margin on Thursday. The Warriors were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Gospel Light Christian apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

McKenna Voncannon and Emily West certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Voncannon dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds, while West posted 13 points. Those ten boards gave Voncannon a new career-high.

Maggie Jo Church continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Gospel Light Christian, dropping a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds. Church has been hot for a while, having posted nine or more boards the last nine times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Noelle Nelson, who earned 11 points.

Asheboro Hybrid Academy's defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 9-11. As for Gospel Light Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 15-4.

Asheboro Hybrid Academy has already played their next game (against South Davidson), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Gospel Light Christian and Veritas Christian Academy will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Friday without much rest having both just played. Veritas Christian Academy will roll in looking for their tenth straight win, something Gospel Light Christian surely won't give up without a fight.
