After flying high against the Leverett's Chapel Lions on Thursday, St. Mary's came back down to earth. The contest between St. Mary's and Overton wasn't particularly close, with St. Mary's falling 49-31. While losing is never fun, St. Mary's can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 999th, while Overton is ranked 290th).
Loss or not, St. Mary's got some senior leadership from Taylor Darnell who scored 9 points along with 6 rebounds and Evan Hodge who scored 11 points. Hodge scored a full 35.5% of St. Mary's points, the seventh time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Overton's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Isaiah Hawkins led the charge by scoring 10 points along with 5 steals. Hawkins is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryce Still, who scored 11 points along with 6 assists and 4 steals.
St. Mary's loss dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Overton, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will take on Longview Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Longview Christian focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday. As for Overton, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Christian Heritage at 12:00 p.m.
