Camarillo had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They snuck past the Ventura Cougars with a 36-31 victory on Thursday. This was payback for the Scorpions, who suffered a 28-18 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Camarillo can attribute much of their success to Jaeah Blaney, who threw for 195 yards and one touchdown.
Another reason for the win was Camarillo's imposing defensive line, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Riley Kavanagh.
Ventura's loss came despite strong showings from Ava Ortman and Mya Rodriguez. Ortman threw for 335 yards and five TDs, while Rodriguez picked up 214 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
