Midwest Top 25 high school boys basketball rankings

Our first set of weekly Midwest Top 25 boys basketball rankings is led by Arsenal Tech (Indianapolis) and superstar Trey Lyles.


1. Indianapolis Arsenal Technical (Indianapolis), 11-1
The Titans handed No. 7 Park Tudor (Indianapolis) its first loss, 95-88 in overtime, as 6-10 Kentucky recruit Trey Lyles scored a school-record 45 points (17 of 20 free throws) to go with 17 rebounds.
Next: They will seek their 11th straight victory Saturday against No. 19 Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland) at the McCracken County Showcase in Paducah, Ky.

2. St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), 7-1
The Eagles flew past Mentor (Ohio) 91-49 on Sunday as 6-foot-3 senior Marsalis Hamilton scored 22 points and 6-7 junior Kipper Nichols added 18.

3. Stevenson (Lincolnshire, Ill.), 13-0
The Patriots won the Proviso West Holiday Tournament for the first time ever as Jalen Brunson scored 23 points to earn MVP honors. Connor Cashaw added 16 points.

4. Curie (Chicago), 10-1
Playing without suspended (one game) superstar Cliff Alexander, the Condors suffered their first loss, 73-66 in overtime, against No. 12 Muskegon (Mich.). Brothers Joshua Stamps and Joseph Stamps scored 25 and 15 points, respectively.

5. Carmel (Ind.), 7-0
The two-time defending Class 4A state champions rolled past South Vigo (Terre Haute, Ind.), 63-38, as Zach McRoberts contributed 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

6. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), 8-1
The Crusaders' only loss was to nationally-ranked Providence (Jacksonville, Fla.) by a slim 60-56 margin.

7. Park Tudor (Indianapolis), 5-1
The Panthers took No. 1 Arsenal Tech into overtime before bowing in a 95-88 overtime thriller. Six-foot-six Xavier University recruit Trevon Bluiett exploded for 51 points (16 of 29 field goals) and grabbed 13 rebounds.

8. Apple Valley (Minn.), 11-1
The Eagles handed No. 21 Blue Valley Northwest (Overland Park, Kan.) its first loss, 72-59, during the Timberwolves Shootout. Duke recruit Tyus Jones set the pace with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Gary Trent Jr. added 17 points.

9. Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.), 9-1
The Buffaloes hold victories over No. 10 La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) and talented Brewster Academy. They will face two stern tests versus national powers this weekend.
Next: Friday vs. Prime Prep (Dallas) at the McCracken County Showcase in Paducah, Ky.

10. La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.), 14-2
The Lakers' best win so far was a 59-55 verdict against nationally-ranked Prime Prep (Dallas), but both of their losses were to Midwestern teams currently ranked ahead of them.

11. Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, Ill.), 11-1
Kentucky recruit Tyler Ulis had 30 points and 10 assists during a 74-60 victory over Detroit Country Day (Beverly Hills, Mich.). Terrone Parham, a 6-7 senior, added 15 points.

12. Muskegon (Mich.), 4-0
The Big Reds handed No. 4 Curie its first loss, 73-66 in overtime, during the Muskegon Showcase Classic as 6-9 junior Deyonta Davis, a Michigan State recruit, produced 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. Senior guard Deshaun Thrower contributed 17 points and seven assists.

13. Pershing (Detroit), 4-1
The Doughboys are unbeaten since losing their opener, 82-69, to Morgan Park (Chicago).

14. Whitney Young (Chicago), 8-4
Playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Dolphins beat nationally-ranked Prime Prep (Dallas) 72-69 during the Cancer Research Classic. Paul White, a 6-9, 210-pound senior, had 29 points and nine assists, while 6-11, 273-pound senior Jahlil Okafor, a Duke recruit, added 24 points.

15. Germantown (Wis.), 12-0
The Warhawks extended the nation's longest current winning streak to 68 games with an 87-44 rout of La Follette (Madison, Wis.) as senior guard Jake Showalter poured in 31 points.

16. Iowa City West (Iowa), 7-0
The two-time defending Class 4A state champions beat Hempstead (Dubuque, Iowa), 67-50, for their 59th consecutive victory.

17. Greensburg (Ind.), 10-0
The Pirates won the prestigious Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle and start 2014 with a perfect record.

18. Bowman Academy (Gary, Ind.), 9-2
Bowman is the only team to beat No. 1 Arsenal Tech, achieving the feat by a 68-64 margin in the season opener.
Next: Saturday at Northrop (Fort Wayne, Ind.)

19. Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland), 5-2
The all-junior lineup lost a 73-60 decision to tall and talented Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) on national TV, but 6-8 Carlton Bragg proved to be one of the best in his class by pulling down 14 rebounds against 7-foot Stephen Zimmerman and 6-10 Chase Jeter, both also juniors.

20. Edwardsville (Ill.), 10-0
The Tigers won a pair of games to capture the Carbondale Holiday Tournament.

21. Blue Valley Northwest (Overland Park, Kan.), 2-1
The defending Class 6A state champions lost to No. 8 Apple Valley (Minn.), 72-59, during the Timberwolves Shootout. Iowa State recruit Clayton Custer, a 6-0 guard, scored 18 points.

22. Huron (S.D.), 5-0
The Tigers are led by a pair of 6-7 seniors. Justin Decker is averaging 19 points and eight rebounds, while Caleb Carr is averaging 17 points, six rebounds and shooting a red-hot 65 percent from 3-point land.

23. Chaminade (St. Louis), 10-1
The Red Devils routed Lexington Catholic (Ky.), 72-41, as 6-7 sophomore Jayson Tatum put together a package of 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

24. St. Mary's Central (Bismarck, N.D.), 5-0
The up-tempo, guard-oriented Saints are led by seniors Ben Weisbeck and Darius Sparks, who are averaging 23 and 18.5 points, respectively.

25. Omaha Central (Neb.), 9-1
The Eagles have won eight straight games since a 64-59 loss to Benson (Omaha, Neb.).
