The Westlake Thunder will take on the Pleasant Grove Vikings at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Westlake is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Westlake made easy work of Lone Peak and carried off a 16-1 win. The Thunder might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 14 matches by seven runs or more this season.
Deveni Tu'ivai made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Tu'ivai was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Westlake got a massive performance out of Madison Buckley, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Lexi Hilton was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double.
Westlake hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in seven consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Pleasant Grove faced Maple Mountain in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Vikings walked away with a 9-6 victory over the Golden Eagles. The win continues a trend for the Vikings in their matchups with the Golden Eagles: they've now won four in a row.
Like Westlake, Pleasant Grove also got a great game from a two-way player: Keslie Draney. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Draney has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run.
In other batting news, Maile Larsen was incredible, firing off two home runs and five RBI while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Mary Severe, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Westlake is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.1 runs over those games. As for Pleasant Grove, their win bumped their record up to 18-6.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Westlake hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Pleasant Grove struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
