Even though the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets scored an imposing 57 points on Saturday, the Houston County Bears still came out on top. Houston County walked away with a 70-57 victory over Thomas County Central. Given Houston County's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 114th, while Thomas County Central is ranked 287th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Houston County to victory were Kameron Plummer and Malik Gillespie. Plummer scored 16 points, while Gillespie scored 22 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gillespie has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Devan Robinson, who scored nine points.
Thomas County Central's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Abe Smith, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds. Smith continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Colby Mullinax was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Houston County is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-10 record this season. As for Thomas County Central, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 11-14.
Houston County does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Thomas County Central, they will be playing at home against Tift County at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Tift County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 31 last Thursday.
