Lakewood is a perfect 4-0 against Oak Harbor since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Cougars will host the Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. Lakewood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
It was a proper cat-fight when Lakewood faced off against Burlington-Edison on Thursday. The Cougars fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 6-5. The Cougars haven't had much luck with the Tigers recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Katie Krueger was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Krueger wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Karly Stewart, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Another was Emma Tocco, who got on base in both of her plate appearances with two runs.
Meanwhile, Oak Harbor lost 12-6 to Lynden Christian on Saturday. The Wildcats have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Haylee Burleigh made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Regan, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Lakewood's defeat dropped their record down to 4-8. As for Oak Harbor, their loss dropped their record down to 10-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Lakewood has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Oak Harbor struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Lakewood took their victory against Oak Harbor when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 12-6 score. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
