Basketball Recap: Elizabeth Sets Scoring Season-High Against Village

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Elizabeth). They enjoyed a cozy 72-55 win over the Village Mountaineers on Thursday. The score was all tied up 33-33 at the break, but the Cardinals were the better team in the second half.

Elizabeth found their leader in sophomore Cohen Steinke, who went 8-for-14 to rack up 20 points in addition to eight assists and six rebounds. Steinke has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 14 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Bryan Jeffs, who posted 16 points along with seven boards and four steals.

Elizabeth was working as a unit and finished the game with 25 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Village's loss came despite strong showings from Caleb Heath and Carter Sterk. Heath went 7-for-11 on his way to 18 points and seven steals, while Sterk went 5-for-9 en route to 25 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Those 18 points gave Heath a new career-high. James Driggers was another key player, putting up seven points and seven boards.

The victory made it two in a row for Elizabeth and bumps their season record up to 9-12. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to three-pointers: they averaged an imposing ten three-pointers in those games compared to only 2.16 in the others. As for Village, they now have a losing record of 9-10.

Coming up, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Cardinals duke it out with the Jaguars at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Elizabeth has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Village, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 60-32 win against Arvada on the 22nd.
