South El Monte is a perfect 10-0 against El Monte since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Eagles will challenge the Lions at 3:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Eagles on Friday. South El Monte put the hurt on Marshall with a sharp 16-2 win. The victory was familiar territory for South El Monte, who have now won three matchups in a row.
Loreli Castrejon made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out eight batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Zoe Medina and Melanie Moreno did most of the damage at the plate: Medina went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI, one triple, and one run, while Moreno went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Madison Aguilar, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
South El Monte hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three batters in 13 consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, El Monte was not the first on the board on Monday, but they got there more often. Everything went their way against Mountain View as they made off with a 14-4 win. The Lions haven't had any issues with the Vikings recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Like South El Monte, El Monte also got a great game from a two-way player: Eve Reyes. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Reyes was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, El Monte let Victoria Valdez and Mia Perez run wild. Valdez went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Perez went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most hits Perez has posted since back in March. Leilani Diaz was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.
South El Monte's record is now 15-2-1. As for El Monte, their record now sits at 13-7.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. South El Monte has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .585. However, it's not like El Monte struggles in that department as they've averaged .526. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South El Monte got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in April against El Monte by a conclusive 7-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
