The South Pike Eagles came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 37-35 win over Port Gibson. Winning is a bit easier when your three-point shooting is a whole 21% better than the opposition, as South Pike's was.
Leading South Pike to victory were Makayla Robertson and Alaysha Williams. Robertson scored nine points along with five steals, while Williams dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. Robertson hasn't dropped below three steals for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Shalia Johnson, who scored five points along with two steals.
Several Blue Waves players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Amyah Hedrick, who scored 15 points. Another player making a difference was Rekiyah Washington, who scored seven points along with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
South Pike pushed their record up to 18-6 with that win, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Port Gibson, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-7.
South Pike does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Port Gibson, they will be playing at home against Franklin County at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Port Gibson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Friday.
