Basketball Game Preview: Standley Lake Gators vs. Pomona Panthers

Standley Lake and Pomona are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2014, but not for long. The Standley Lake Gators will square off against the Pomona Panthers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Standley Lake is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.3 points per game this season.

Standley Lake is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Dakota Ridge just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Wednesday. They received a blow as they fell 65-48 to the Eagles. While the Gators didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Eagles 25-18 in the first quarter.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Asher Serlen, who went 7 of 12 en route to 18 points. The matchup was his fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Derrek Sims, who posted 12 points and five rebounds.

Meanwhile, Pomona was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against Green Mountain, falling 71-45. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 243rd, while the Rams are ranked 115th).

Pomona's defeat dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Standley Lake, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 10-5.

Standley Lake strolled past Pomona when the teams last played back in January of 2024 by a score of 60-41. The rematch might be a little tougher for Standley Lake since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
