Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. The tradition continues to close out the 2024-25 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Kenyon Aguino of
Volcano Vista (Albuquerque) is the 2024-25 New Mexico MaxPreps Player of the Year. A repeat selection, the 6-foot-7 senior forward led the Hawks to a 29-2 record and their fourth consecutive Class 5A state championship.
For the season, Aguino averaged 20.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest. He shot 60.7 percent from the field and 78.0 percent from the free throw line.
In the state title game, Aguino contributed 18
points, seven rebounds and three assists in a 60-53 overtime win against
Sandia (Albuquerque).
Over the course of his decorated four-year career, Aguino piled up over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds while helping the Rams to a 116-4 record.
Volcano Vista joined Hobbs (1999-2002) as the only teams in New Mexico's highest classification to win four consecutive state titles.
Aguino signed with Montana in November over nearly a dozen other offers.
