Baseball Recap: Charlotte Wins Going Away Against Sabinal

Charlotte made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Sabinal, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Trojans blew past the Yellowjackets 8-2 on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Trojans: when they faced off against the Yellowjackets back in March, they had to take a 14-4 defeat.

Josh Gaitan made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He has become a key player for Charlotte: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-8 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Anthony Sanchez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Preston Castillo, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI.

The win made it two in a row for Charlotte and bumps their season record up to 6-10. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 3-12 La Pryor and 3-11 Sabinal. As for Sabinal, their loss was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-11.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Charlotte will head out to challenge Three Rivers at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Trojans surely won't give up without a fight. As for Sabinal, they will venture away from home to square off against La Pryor at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets are facing the Bulldogs at the right time seeing as the Bulldogs are stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
