If the Lejeune Devil Pups were riding high off their 84-59 takedown of the Northside - Pinetown Panthers last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Lejeune fell to East Carteret 77-73. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Lejeune lost on Thursday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Connor Shea, who scored 20 points along with seven rebounds. Cam'ron Myers was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
East Carteret had a senior duo take command as Charles Matheka scored 30 points along with five assists and three steals and Shamel Baker almost dropped a double-double on 22 points and nine rebounds. Matheka is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 19 or more in the last 11 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Sean Walker, who scored eight points along with five rebounds.
Lejeune now has a losing record at 10-11. As for East Carteret, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-8 record this season.
Lejeune and Jones will face off at 7:30 p.m. on February 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. One thing working in Lejeune's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last six games. East Carteret does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
