Lanier is 1-9 against Jefferson since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Voks will take on the Mustangs at 10:00 a.m.
Highlands hit Lanier with a five-run fourth inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Voks lost 9-2 to the Owls.
Lanier saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Freddy Gonzales, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Those stolen bases were Gonzales' first of the season.
Jefferson came out on top against Sam Houston on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run second inning. The Mustangs never let the Hurricanes get on the board and left with a 13-0 victory. That looming 13-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Mustangs yet this season.
Eric Chavez tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Aiden Urdiales was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Jefferson: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least three hits, but 5-7-1 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Gabriel Benavidez, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Jefferson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .647. They are 7-3-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Jefferson is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-8-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Lanier, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-8.
Lanier suffered a grim 17-0 defeat to Jefferson in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Voks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
