The Greenback Cherokees will take on the Sweetwater Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Greenback is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Greenback was able to grind out a solid victory over Rockwood, taking the game 12-7. That's two games straight that the Cherokees have won by exactly five runs.
Peyton Vanskiver was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. Vanskiver was even better at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Addison Brown was a standout: she scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Marlee Ownsby, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Greenback always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Tellico Plains a 3-0 shutout.
The result came thanks to Sadie Scott's shutout, as she gave up just three hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
Sweetwater pushed their record up to 13-0 with the win, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Greenback, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Greenback has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Sweetwater struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Greenback's way against Sweetwater in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Greenback made off with a 12-6 victory. Will the Cherokees repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
