For the first time this season, South Brunswick will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. After each having a week off, they and the Red Springs Red Devils will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. South Brunswick is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last three games.
South Brunswick proved they can win big on September 12th (they won by 21) and last Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 21-20 victory over Purnell Swett.
South Brunswick got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Amerius Revels out in front who rushed for 129 yards and a pair of scores. The dominant performance also gave Revels a new career-high in rushing touchdowns (two). Edward Young was another key receiver, picking up 92 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something South Brunswick proved: they limited Purnell Swett to a paltry 2.4 yards per carry. The team can thank Grady Sotriffer for the heroic effort on defense: he. South Brunswick's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.4.
South Brunswick's defense didn't let Aidyn Locklear, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. In that department, Michael Mendez was the leader with two. Sotriffer was another major factor on D, forcing one fumble, making 17 total tackles, and defending one pass.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Red Springs). They strolled past Douglas Byrd with points to spare last Friday, taking the game 35-18. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Red Devils considering their 12-point performance the game before.
South Brunswick better keep an eye on Chase Boone. He was instrumental in Red Springs' win, throwing for 254 yards and three TDs while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt, and also rushing for 40 yards and one score. Boone is crushing it when it comes to passing touchdowns: he's passed for at least three every time he's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Raymond Blue Jr, who rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown.
Red Springs didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Shamon Oxendine, Taquan Ellerbe Jr, Ernest (Trey) Bratcher, and Malachi Locklear picked up one apiece.
South Brunswick now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Red Springs, their victory bumped their record up to 2-3.
South Brunswick suffered a grim 38-12 defeat to Red Springs in their previous meeting back in August of 2018. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
