Roosevelt (Los Angeles, Calif.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 13 points, drop to six before the final whistle blew on a 20-14 victory over
Huntington Park (Calif.).
The Rough Riders led 7-0 at halftime, but the Spartans recaptured the lead on a touchdown with 4:00 left in the third. Roosevelt grabbed hold of the lead when
Alex Barreto ran for a touchdown with 1:00 remaining in the third quarter, and never relinquished it.
Each side put up seven points during the third quarter, and the fourth quarter began with the margin still at seven.
With the win RHS extended its winning streak to seven games. The Los Angeles school defeated the Jaguars 40-34 last week.
The Rough Riders' most effective player was
Arriaga David. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown.
Aaron Gutierrez made a difference for Huntington Park. The sophomore running back ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to five on the year.
Roosevelt came in allowing an average of 18.6 points per game this season. RHS held firm on the defensive front, and kept HP well below the 22.0 points it had been averaging per game.
A 27-21 Roosevelt victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The loss comes after Huntington Park defeated Jordan 41-0 last week.
Roosevelt (7-1) goes up against Jordan in a Eastern game matchup next week, while Huntington Park (1-6) locks horns with South East also in a Eastern game.
