The Centerville Elks will face off against the Walnut Hills Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Centerville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Centerville is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Ohio's top teams: Greenville, who was ranked 14th at the time (Centerville was ranked 21st). The Elks came up short against the Green Wave on Wednesday, falling 8-1. The Elks' defeat signaled the end of their seven-game winning streak.
Caitlyn Belcher spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and six unearned) runs on nine hits.
At the plate, Centerville saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Shelby Cotterman, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, it's playoff time, and Walnut Hills had no trouble coming through when it counted. They blew past Princeton 12-6 on Wednesday.
Quinn Curry was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. Curry was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Louisa Nacke was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Kendra Sullivan was another key player, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
Walnut Hills has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-22 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Centerville, their loss dropped their record down to 20-7.
Walnut Hills' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Centerville has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Walnut Hills, though, as they've been averaging 9.2 hits. Given Centerville's sizable advantage in that area, the Eagles will need to find a way to close that gap.
